Message Cards for Patrons

animated graphic of floating bottle containing messageWhen you check out a book at the Garden City Public Library over the next few weeks, you might get a surprise message card created by one of our teen volunteers! Message cards have been placed like bookmarks in books throughout the Children’s, Young Adult, and Adult Departments to send positive messages and brighten the day of patrons who check them out.

This community-service program has been funded by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Thanks to the tween and teen volunteers who helped make message cards for the program and to the Friends of the Garden City Public Library, who funded the program. Make sure to stop by the Library and check out a book to see if you get a message card from one of our teen volunteers!

Renew Items Via Text Message

If you are signed up for SMS Alerts, you will receive simple-text messages to your cell phone to remind you that you have items that are due soon, overdue, or on hold. If you reply with the word renew, the system will respond with one of two messages:

  1. “Your items could not be renewed” (if no items are eligible for renewal), or
  2. “(x) of (y) items were renewed” (if some or all items are eligible for renewal).

Items that are not eligible for renewal include overdue items, items with holds waiting, or items already renewed. Patrons who owe fines for previously returned materials may not be able to renew materials using this feature. Should you wish to pay fines online by credit card, visit ALISweb.org, log in to your account, and click on “unpaid fines and bills.”

To sign up for SMS Alerts, log into your library account, click on “Modify Personal Info,” enter a mobile-phone number, and click on the “opt in” link. Charges from your cell-phone service provider, if any, will apply.

Tweens & Teens Free Little Library

animated graphic of books flying out of bookendsThe Tweens and Teens Department‘s Free Little Library, which launched in December 2019, is still available in the Tweens and Teens Room. Books are free for patrons to take home. The Free Little Library will be available as long as books last. The Tweens and Teens Department will add new books to the Tweens and Teens Free Little Library as needed and as supplies last.

Books target readers in Grades 6-12 and were published within the last two years. Books have been donated by Young Adult Librarian Laura Giunta, who received the books through her work on the American Library Association‘s Best Fiction for Young Adults 2020 and 2021 Committees.

For questions, please contact Young Adult Librarian Laura Giunta via email.

PARP Banner

Once again, we are pleased to help promote the PARP Reading program with the Garden City School District and PTA. PARP is a program that asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills in the child and strengthens their relationship.

PARP is a program that cements the necessary bond between the home and the school to encourage love of reading in our children. It was developed in 1978 by the late State Senator James Donovan, Chairman of the State Senate Education Committee. In 1987 the New York State PTA was asked to assume the program’s helm, and since then has administered the program. The program was originally named Parents As Reading Partners but was changed in 2015. For more information about PARP visit https://nyspta.org/home/programs/literacy/.

We currently have the PARP banner hanging in the Garden City Public Library lobby. All are welcome to come in and take advantage of this sign for a photo op! Happy Reading!
