Programs!*  During the school year, the majority of Young Adult programs are held on Saturday afternoons. Craft programs and workshops are particularly popular. Other programs held during the week are the "Babysitting Workshop" and the "College Financial Aid Workshop." Dates and times for these programs are announced in the Garden City News, the Garden City Life, the Library's Newsletter, Calendar of Events, and fliers found on the YA Librarian's Desk.

Story times are held on Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., beginning July 6 and ending August 4. Young adults read, sing, and do finger plays and a simple craft with groups of children between the ages of 2 and 8.

To insure the quality of the storytimes and the comfort of the storytellers, volunteers are required to attend two training sessions prior to the first summer they participate. Formal training sessions were held in April, May, and June. We are happy to welcome all our new and returning readers and look forward to a great "Teens & Tots Storytime" this summer.

Summer Reading Club
Registration began June 14 for the "Make Waves @ Your Library" young-adult summer-reading club. See flier for details and requirements.

All ‘tweens and teens, from those entering middle school for the first time in September to those entering 12th grade, are invited to “Make Waves @ Your Library” by joining the Young Adult 2010 summer reading club. Read books, win raffle prizes, solve puzzles, and participate in special programs. The theme this year is water and beaches - summertime. Programs were planned to fit the theme.

To be a member of the club, just register at the YA Desk or online. All registrants receive a bonus prize bag. Membership has no meeting requirements. Registration began June 14 and continues throughout July. Since the Young Adult Department is accessible online, you can still join the summer reading club and come to the bash even if you are at camp or away all summer.

Participants can read anything - a summer assignment book, a favorite author, a newspaper or magazine - or even listen to an audiobook. Win prizes all summer long by placing mini-reviews into the raffle box. If you submit a review online, a raffle is put in the box for you. If you’re not into doing reviews, you can keep a reading diary and show it to a YA Librarian by Thursday, August 12.

Try your luck and skill at the "Teen Guessing Game." What is more fun than winning a jar full of goodies when you have guessed the number in the jar? A different goodie is up for guessing each week.

Reading club participants will get an invitation to the "Back to School Bash" on Wednesday, August 18.

"Yak & Snack" Book Discussions
Join the Young Adult Librarian and other young adults in grades 6-12 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to enjoy refreshments and join a discussion of these books:

Teens voted in school libraries and public libraries throughout New York State and selected J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows as the 2010 Teen 3 Apples Book Award winner. Thousands of students vote every year and because they have nominated the finalists themselves, this is truly a teen’s choice award. Visit the YA Room at the Library and check out one of this year’s other nominated titles. They include:

Breaking Dawn, by Stephenie Meyer   The Dead and Gone, by Susan Beth Pfeffer
The Giver, by Lois Lowry   Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen

New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer   Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton   Push, by Sapphire
Solving Zoe, by Barbara Dee   Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli
