Crafting with Friends (Ages 2-5)
Children ages 2-5 (not in Kindergarten) and an adult caregiver can join Mary Maguire and make a Very Hungry Caterpillar craft. This program takes place on Saturday, April 20, at 10:00 AM.
Registration with a Library Card on Eventkeeper is required and begins April 9 at 10:00 AM. You must do a separate registration for each child you wish to attend this program.

Crafting with Friends for K-5
Children in Grades K-5 can join Mary Maguire and make a Painted Butterfly Origami Craft. This program takes place on Saturday, April 20, at 11:15 AM.
Registration with a library card on Eventkeeper is required and begins on April 9 at 10:00 AM. You must do a separate registration for each child you wish to attend this program.

Library Staff Participate at Inaugural Adelphi Writers & Readers Festival

Readers and writers came together for two days of everything literary at a festival at Adelphi University last weekend, Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6.

Library Director Marianne Malagon.
Garden City Public Library enlisted its support to the event as a sponsor and helped provide representatives from Garden City and other Nassau public libraries to enhance the festival with readers’ advisory and information about local libraries’ services.
Among those in attendance for the Garden City Public Library were Library Board Chairman Randy Colahan, Library Director Marianne Malagon, Assistant Library Director Ralph Guiteau, and Librarian Kristen Sweeney.
The free celebration of storytelling, literature, and the power of the written word featured best-selling author and Adelphi alumna Alice Hoffman, who inspired and founded the event.
Hoffman is the author of more than 40 books, including Practical Magic, The Dovekeepers, and Aquamarine.

Nassau Libraries sent representatives to support the festival with readers’ advisory and information about local libraries’ services.
These Garden City and Nassau Library representatives, along with students, teachers, emerging writers, and the local Garden City community and beyond, had a chance to meet bestselling authors Victor LaValle, Adriana Trigiani, Ann Leary, Mona Awad, Ada Calhoun, Liana Finck, Lauren Grodstein, Charles Leerhsen, Lisa Belkin, Julie Klam, Kim Coleman Foote, Laura Zigman; discover their next favorite writer; and get an inside look at the art of writing and the business of publishing.
Roof-Replacement Project Nearing Completion
The Garden City Public Library’s roof-replacement project is nearing completion. Abatement has been completed, as well as the roof work. The containers have also been removed from the parking lot. Masonry restoration work is ongoing; the project will take a few more weeks to complete. This work has no impact on Library hours and services.
Library to Install New Entryway Doors Fitted with Security Devices
Village and Library Trustees, along with Village and Library administration, met with construction representatives to discuss a capital project at the Library on Monday, April 1, 2024.
The Village continues to invest in safety and security enhancements at the Garden City Public Library. A pre-construction contractors meeting was held to move forward on the recent approval by the Village Board of Trustees of a new capital project to install new doors and security devices in the Library’s entryway.
On Monday, Village and Library administration met with representatives from several companies to discuss the project. In attendance were Village Trustee and Village Board liaison to the Garden City Public Library Bruce Torino, Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi, Building Superintendent Giuseppe Giovanniello, Village Civil Engineer Andrew Tock, Village Construction Inspector Scott Schellas, Public Works Superintendent John Borroni, Village Engineer Craig Bandini, Library Board Chairman Randy Colahan, Library Trustee Colleen Foley, Library Director Marianne Malagon, and Assistant Library Director Ralph Guiteau.
Among the contractor representatives in attendance were Chad Urschel, a field supervisor for Intelli-Tec Security Services, Greg Popek from Intricate Tech Solutions, Bill Lopez from NABCO, and Noel Eberts from S&L Storefront.
“This newly approved capital project will further enhance security measures we are implementing at the Library to ensure a safe space for patrons and employees alike,” Mr. Colahan said. “Thank you to Trustee Torino, Mayor Carter Flanagan, and the Village Board for their continued strong support of the Garden City Library.”
The Village Board engaged the professional services of Intricate Tech Solutions, LTD to install the doors, and Intelli-Tec Security Services to install the required security devices for the new doors. According to Mr. Borroni, the doors, once ordered, are expected to arrive in approximately 10 weeks. “The project is underway,” he said.

No registration is required, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Friendship Bracelets – Community Service
Teen volunteers use beads and strings to design friendship bracelets for Library patrons, 1/29/24.
Make friendship bracelets for friends and Library patrons during “Friendship Bracelets for Community Service, which will be held at the Library on Monday, April 29, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
In this program inspired by the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, create friendship bracelets to trade and give to friends and for the Library to give to patrons.
At least one bracelet you make must be used for the Library to give out to patrons in order to earn community service.
This program is for tweens and teens in Grades 6-12. Registration is required and begins Tuesday, April 23, at 10:00 AM online via Eventkeeper.
