Wireless Internet Access

E-mail Print

The Garden City Public Library is a Wi-Fi hot spot, providing free Internet access to users of laptops and handheld devices capable of receiving wireless signals. There is no charge to use this service.

It’s my computer. Can’t I do whatever I want?

You will be attached to the Library’s network, and must abide by the Library’s Wireless Internet Access Policy, which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library's Internet service. The Library’s Code of Conduct also applies while you are in the Library.

Where can I connect?

You may connect from almost anywhere in the Adult and Young Adult Services areas on the main floor, including the Adult Lounge and Quiet Study Room. Users are not permitted to use their laptop or notebook computers in the Children’s Room or in the Computer Lab.

May I plug my laptop into a Library power outlet?

You may plug your laptop into the designated power strips only. The Library is not responsible for any damage to your equipment that may result from using the Library’s power supply. Under no circumstances are the power strips to be moved or wires of any kind to extend across an area where someone might walk.

Is my information safe while using wireless?

Wireless Ethernet is not secure. Your information is not protected while using wireless, unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.) Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information. Any user on the wireless local area network can spy on unencrypted traffic from other wireless users. (Although wired networks tend to be more secure, the Library cannot assure the safety of your personal data when you use either our wired or wireless Internet access.) All wireless access users should have up-to-date virus protection on their laptop computers or wireless devices.

Will I be able to print?

No, printers are not available via the wireless connection. If you need to make a printout, save your data to a diskette or USB drive and use one of the computers in the Computer Lab. USB drives are for sale at the Circulation Desk for $7.00 each.

How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?

To use the wireless network, you will need a laptop or handheld device with either an 802.11b or 802.11g Ethernet adaptor (PCI card, USB adaptor, or motherboard integrated). Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the wireless network.

The Library does not provide wireless adaptors. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library's network.

Can someone at the Library help me configure my computer?

No, Library staff cannot configure your computer. You are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.

For troubleshooting or technical assistance, please contact your computer manufacturer’s support services.

More detailed information on connecting to the Library's Wi-Fi network is available at the Library.
