Depression Era Glass Print Email

photograph of Depression glass sugar bowlView colorful glass, machine-produced from the mid 1920s through the 1930s in the Library’s showcases from June 1-25.  The exhibit will include tableware, stemware, children’s dishes, kitchen glass, and bedroom and bathroom glassware.  A short history of the patterns represented and companies of production will be included.

Watercolor painting by Charlene Schwartz Kalin depicting flag draped over wicker chair, wicker table, and dogA solo watercolor show by Charlene Schwartz Kalin entitled “Life Around Us” will be exhibited June 2–28, 2013 in the Library’s gallery. View colorful paintings of many topics created by this talented Long Island artist.

Charlene Schwartz Kalin’s professional art career began with an Associates Degree in commercial art while studying at F.I.T. and NYC Community College.  She received a scholarship to Brooklyn Museum School of Fine Arts.  Her work for a NYC ad agency gave the experience she needed to open Sunflower Studios in Manhattan.  The artist subsequently freelanced in graphic design for newspapers.  Charlene is currently a member of the Art League of Nassau County and the National Art League.  Her watercolor paintings have received many awards during juried shows.

Listen Up! June is Audiobook Month at the Garden City Public Library.

On May 30, publishers, producers, and narrators in the audio publishing world gathered at a formal gala at the New York Historical Society in New York City for the 18th Annual Audies, honoring the year’s best spoken-word entertainment. Audies were awarded to the most engaging and innovative audiobooks of the 2013 publishing year. Garden City residents are invited to come to the Library to check out the winning audiobook titles of the year.

Come and browse the Library’s Audio-Visual Center located on the Lower Level to select your summer listening. There are also two special displays of bestselling fiction and nonfiction audiobooks on CD on the main level as you enter the Library. Get caught listening!

photo of summer reading book displayCome and browse the new displays at the Library to discover books to enjoy this summer while you relax at the beach, by the pool, or on your own front porch.  The new displays include: Social Media…What’s it all about?;  Books from the Bottom Bookshelf;  Let the Season Begin;  All American Summer Entertaining;  Outside Projects;  and After “Yes,” Before “I do” & Everything in Between.  There’s even a new gardening display, which features a quote from the Roman Orator Cicero: “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”  Visit the Library; you’ll find books and much more - everything you need to enjoy your summer.
