Public libraries across the country are being asked to help provide information to their patrons about new health-insurance options under the Affordable Care Act. Starting October 1, individuals without any health insurance or without affordable insurance, as well as small businesses with fewer than 50 employees that want to offer health-insurance coverage to their employees, are able to enroll in a plan through health-insurance marketplaces being run by the federal and some state governments. In New York State, the New York State of Health has been established as the official health-plan marketplace to shop for, compare, and enroll in a health plan.
Sign-up for a health plan runs from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014 for coverage beginning as early as January 1, 2014. Enrollment is online at https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov and through the Customer Service Center whose phone number is 1-855-355-5777. People can also receive assistance with the enrollment process in person at designated locations with trained representatives, online, and by telephone.
The Library has received informational handouts to distribute to the public who want information about enrolling in a health plan. The handouts are available at the Circulation Desk, in the Job Corner, and in the Reference area in the Library.
