October is National Reading Group Month. To celebrate, the Garden City Public Library is introducing new Book Club in a Bag titles. If you’ve always wanted to start a book club or if your existing book club is looking for an easier way to select books, then the Library’s Book Club in a Bag may be just what you need. The Book Club in a Bag contains everything you need to run a book-discussion group.
Each canvas tote bag checks out for six weeks and contains 10 copies of a discussible title, usually a large type, audio material, and an information package with a summary, book reviews, biographical information, discussion questions, an author interview, and suggestions for further reading. The bag also includes a sign-up sheet for the leader to keep track of who has which book.
This fall, the Library is adding Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize winner, The Goldfinch, and Jojo Moyes's latest bestseller, One Plus One, to the existing collection of 51 book-club titles. The new Book Club in a Bag titles will be available to be reserved beginning October 27.
If the title your book club selects is not available in the Book Club in a Bag collection, you can ask the Reference Librarians if multiple copies of your selection can be interloaned for your group. The Librarians will also provide background information and discussion questions for your group if available. To celebrate National Reading Group Month, there is a new Reading Group Central display of recommended titles with print copies and audiobooks.
Another way to find a title for your book club is to find out what other book groups are reading by asking the reference librarians. Whether you want to reserve a new book for yourself or are looking for a recommendation for your book club, call, visit, or Librarians Laura Flanagan and Ann Garnett to talk about books with book lovers just like you.
