News From the Children's Room

The 96th Indianapolis 500 is being held May 27 this year, so celebrate by checking out the Children’s Room’s book display about racecar driving. We have books on the Indy 500 race, such as Indy Cars, by Kate Riggs, as well as books on NASCAR, such as The History of NASCAR, by Jim Francis and Famous NASCAR Tracks, by Jim Gigliotti. Also on display is the book series, The World of NASCAR, which goes into depth on the history of NASCAR, stock cars, racing, and famous racecar drivers, such as Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon, among others.

For sports you can do outdoors or indoors, check out books on martial arts or swimming, such as Martial Arts, by Bob Knotts or Swimming, by Bob Temple. If you’re looking for activities you can do out in the wilderness, borrow books on kayaking or hiking, such as Canoeing and Kayaking, by Lois Rock, and Hiking, by Adam G. Klein. For children interested in outdoor activities they can do in their own neighborhood, we have books on skateboarding, inline skating, such as Skateboarding: How it Works, by Emily Sohn; Inline Skating, by Steve Glidewell; as well as books on general outdoor games, such as Go Out and Play! Favorite Outdoor Games from KaBOOM, by various authors. We also have fitness and sports DVDs, including Fun with Fitness: Health and Nutrition for Kids, Family Yoga, The Magic School Bus: Super Sports Fun, and 6 Fit Kids’ Workouts, among others.

Newer titles include Bicycles: Pedal Power, by Lynn Peppas; Bikes on the Move, by Willow Clark; Bicycles, by Kristin Petrie; and Bicycle Riding, by Tracy Maurer. Books on bicycle motocross (BMX) racing include Xtreme Sports: Biking, by Sue L. Hamilton, and BMX, by Joanne Mattern. Additionally, we have books on bike safety, such as On My Bike, by Wil Mara, and Ride Right: Bicycle Safety, by Jill L. Donahue, and on famous cyclists, such as Dave Mirra, by Jeff Savage, and Cycling: Lance Armstrong’s Impossible Ride, by Michael Sandler. We also have picture books about bicycles, such as Caillou Rides a Bike, by Nicole Nadeau; New Red Bike, by James Ransome; and Sally Jean, the Bicycle Queen, by Cari Best. For older readers, novels about bicycles include The Big Bike Race, by Lucy Jane Bledsoe, and The Case of the Bicycle Bandit, by James Preller, plus others.

Come check out a book about Memorial Day to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend! The Children’s Room has both fiction and nonfiction books about the holiday. To learn more about war memorials, such as the World War I, World War II, the USS Arizona, and Vietnam War memorials, check out the series War Memorials, by various authors, and Symbols of Freedom, by various authors. 

We also have books of patriotic poems and songs, such as America, the Beautiful, by Katharine Lee Bates, The Glorious American Songbook, by Cooper Edens; Yankee Doodle, by Richard Schackburg, and This Land is Your Land, by Woody Guthrie. If you’re looking for music to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend, you can also borrow the children’s CDs Patriotic Songs and Marches, This Land is Your Land: Favorite American Folk Songs, and Songs About America.
